Great Art for Great Lakes Richelle Miller & Thomas Anderson - Paddle Project

Thomas Anderson is an emerging Indigenous Visual Artist, working in many artistic disciplines, including story telling. Thomas’ creative process has foundations in his Haudensaunee culture and Indigenous Knowledge. The nature of his multi-medium artworks supports the maintenance of cultural/traditional knowledge by involving communities both directly and indirectly. Thomas has collaborated with artists for installation in surrounding communities and has been commissioned by local health facilities for art installations. Various art exhibitions including 2017 First Nations Art, Woodlands Cultural Centre, Martin Luther College ‘Joy’ Art Exhibit, and travelling art exhibits in collaboration with Waterloo University.

Richelle Miller is a Six Nations artist who has been instrumental in creating the Music for the Spirit arts camp. She and Thomas have previously collaborated on the Legacy Blanket project, a collaboration between young artists and elders which involves creating textile works to tell Indigenous stories with a focus on historic events, resilience, wellness, and healing.

Richelle Miller & Thomas Anderson are creating opportunities to share Indigenous stories of how water is life, and how the cycle of life and water flows through time in a series of interactive online workshops. This exchange of knowledge will produce new work for installation on the Six Nations of the Grand River Territory.

Paddle Connections Workshop

Please join Richelle Miller & Thomas Anderson as they continue to lead us through a sharing of Indigenous perspective, voices and history of Indigenous traditions through time, while acknowledging water as a sacred gift that connects all life. Through the use of paddle designs, the artists will share stories of:

  • Water as the most life sustaining gift on Mother Earth and the interconnection among all living beings
  • Water sustains us, flows between us, within us, and replenishes us
  • Indigenous symbolism, Water Clans, cycles and Water is Life

The event will include:

  • GANO:NYOK (Thanksgiving Address) serves as a daily reminder to appreciate and
    acknowledge all things. Reinforces the connection that people have to the world around us.
  • Words before all other …(Visual Thanksgiving Address )
  • A virtual reading of ‘The Song My Paddle Sings” by Megan Hill, NY (backdrop historical
    site, links to tourism, Good minds. com )
  • A talk by Thomas on the interconnectedness of all life and the importance of water as seen in the connection between the human spirit and paddling
  • Time to work on paddles, designs through painting, drawing, carving of paddles for
  • Eagle (messenger) sculpture, and a collaborative wampum belt (dish with one spoon)
  • Intermission with Cindy Martin who will speak on Reconnection Journey teachings, land, water, and air based
  • Participant sharing of paddle designs and stories
  • Social Dance with all participants, teaching of song with Frank McNaughton
  • Language – Teha

Workshop 1: Horn Rattle & Wampum Workshops

PLEASE NOTE: There are two separate Zoom links to sign up to if you wish to attend both sessions. You are welcome to join just one, or both of the workshops. Everyone is welcome.

In these very special workshops, GAGL artists Richelle Miller & Thomas Anderson will facilitate collective connection, sharing knowledge around the Dish With One Spoon wampum belt and horn rattles .

Horn Rattle Workshop: 10-11am

The horn rattle is used in ceremonial and social songs as a companion to the water drum. Haohyoh (Ken Maracle), a faith keeper of the Lower Cayuga Longhouse, Member of the Cayuga Nation, Iroquois Confederacy, Deer Clan, will be speaking during this special workshop. A ceremonial song giving thanks and reflecting on our living world will close the session.

Wampum Workshop: 12:30-1:30pm

As a faith keeper of the Lower Cayuga Longhouse, Ken Maracle travels across Turtle Island talking about the origins and cultural and historical significance of wampum belts. The dish with one spoon wampum belt is one of the most significant belts. It reminds people we only have one dish, one mother earth we can take from. We should take only what we need, leave something for others, and keep the dish clean. It also demonstrates our collective responsibility to share equally.

As part of the Great Art for Great Lakes project, Richelle and Thomas will be using this experience to inform their “Paddle Project” installation, to be publicly installed later this year!

Workshop 1: Hand Drumming

Please join us for our next GAGL TV WORKSHOP for the PADDLE PROJECT  🎉

In this online space, GAGL artists Richelle Miller & Thomas Anderson will facilitate collective connection, sharing indigenous culture by intertwining drum, song, and ways of knowing.

The drum is the heartbeat of Mother Earth. The natural sound of the drum creates an environment’s soundscape of the natural world. Generational storytelling emerges through Art, Music, Dance, and Film. Drums, language, and connection are the basis of the relationship with all living things and the Creator. The drum voices our connection to all creation. When we drum, we strengthen our connection to each other.

This workshop will include:
  • Thanksgiving address with educator and language speaker Michael Montour
  • Hand Drum Making Workshop with singer, songwriter and hand drummer Aqua NibiiWaawaaskone
  • Storytelling session with language educator Tehanare Henhawk
  • Performance of ‘Water Song’ with Aqua NibiiWaawaaskone and the group
